Flame Tree Mandala draws on the striking form of the Australian flame tree, Brachychiton acerifolius, known for the brilliant red, bell-shaped flowers that can cover the tree when it is almost entirely without leaves.
The species also carries a much older relationship with people and place. The nutritious seeds of Brachychiton species were traditionally eaten by Indigenous Australians, either raw or roasted after careful preparation.
Reimagined through the circular form of the mandala, the work invites a closer contemplation of the tree, its patterns, beauty and the layers of knowledge held within the Australian landscape.
